Scouts
Jump in and get muddy. Give back and get set.
A young person can come in to the Troop at aged 10 and may stay until they are 14.5 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group.
Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. “Participation” rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges. During the four years at Scouts each young person has the opportunity to complete their Chief Scouts Gold Award, which is the highest award available in the Scout section and shows a Scout has gained a wide range of knowledge and skills.
Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes.
Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting.
Each of our three Scout Troops is run by a team of Leaders who along with the Patrol Leaders plan the programme. The Scouts are organised into groups of 6 to 9 called patrols. The patrols are named after different animals, and are made up of a mix of age ranges. Each patrol is led by a Patrol Leader.
As well as a huge variety of activities, training throughout the year is geared towards the ten day summer camp. Camping is one of the important activities that Scouts take part in. There are usually three weekend training camps near Cribbs Causeway. The Scouts build their own camp sites as patrols, cook their own meals on open fires and take part in activities such as pioneering, patrol challenges, orienteering and archery.
